The Colorado Chieftain, March 3, 1870, Microfilmed by the Colorado Historical Society, in the custody of the Pueblo, Colorado, Public Library: San Luis, Colorado February 17, 1870 At a mass meeting held on the 14th of February, 1870, at the Court House in San Luis, in the county of Costilla, the following proceedings were had (sic) in reference to the attempt of Mr. Chaves to annex this portion of Colorado to New Mexico. The meeting was called to order by Mr. Walsen, who explained the object of the meeting, after which Dario Gallegos was elected Chairman and Fred Walsen, Secretary. The meeting was addressed by Hon. H.E. Easterday, Jesus M. Silva, and others, condemning the action of Francisco Chaves, Delegate to Congress from New Mexico, and his alders in their scheme to have the counties of Costilla, Conejos and Saguache out off (sic) from Colorado and annexed to New Mexico. On motion of Nasario Gallegos, a committee was appointed, consisting of H.E. Easterday, Juan Miguel Vigil and Jose Ignacio Ortega to draft resolutions expressive of the sense of the meeting on the subject. Pending the report of the committee, the meeting was again addressed by several speakers. The committee submitted the following resolutions:

Resolved, That we, the citizens of Costilla county, do remonstrate against being annexed to the Territory of New Mexico, and that we consider that this obnoxious movement involves our prosperity, and that such annexation would sacrifice the best interests of the people of this valley.

Resolved , That we circulate petitions of remonstrance, for signatures, to be forwarded, together with a copy of the proceedings of this meeting, through the Secretary, to Hon. Allen A. Bradford, our Delegate to Congress, requesting him to use his utmost exertions to thwart this attempt of annexation.

Resolved, That a report of this meeting be forwarded to the Colorado CHIEFTAIN and the Denver News, requesting each of those papers to publish the same, and to assist us in retaining our present position as a part of the Territory of Colorado.

On motion of Don Nasario Gallegos, the resolutions were adopted unanimously.

A petition of remonstrance, in accordance with the resolutions, was then circulated, and signed by every one present, after which the meeting adjourned. (The petition was circulated throughout the county two hundred and eighty-seven signatures obtained, whereupon it was forwarded to Washington.)

Dario Gallegos, Chairman FRED WALSEN, Secretary
