Bird listening stations with analyis

A project developed by Kirk Moloney

The main page of this website provides links to websites presenting the analysis of birdsong data provided by two types of listening devices:Birdnet-Pis and PUCs. These and other bird listening devices have proliferated over the last few years. A bit more information follows:

Birdnet Pi

The first type of device is a Birdnet-Pi built on a Raspberry Pi Platform. More information about Birdnet on a Raspberry Pi can be obtained from the following websites:

Using a Birdnet-Pi station requires some coding and computer skills. The information from the Birdnet-Pi platform can be obtained from a webpaged served up on the local network to which the device is connected via WiFi or ethernet. The output can also be served up to the Birdweather.com website and dowloaded from there (see below).

Birdweather PUC

The birdweather PUC device is designed to be portable but can also be hardwired in place to provide a permanent installation. There are a lot of stations out there and the number is growing rapidly. It is an easier device to employ than the Birdnet-Pi. Most of what you need to know can be obtained from the Birdweather website.

The data from the PUC can be viewed on apps provided by the PUC developers for cell phones and tablets. There is also a map on the birdweather site that has links to PUCS and Birdnet-Pis. The Pi stations are ones that have been registered with Birdweather through the Birdweather site and linked to the Raspberry Pi through the Birdnet-Pi software. Data can also be downloaded from the Birdweather.com site using the Data Explorer link. In order to download data you will need to set up a free online account through the Birdweather site.

Analysis of birdsong data

The analyses presented on the linked birdsong websites were done with the R programming language using R-studio. Graphical output from R was organized as webpages using the jAlbum software package. I am happy to answer inquiries using the email address provided above.
